Purpose of Recruitment

This position is not part of the Merit System and, therefore, is neither subject to the Rules & Regulations of the Personnel Board nor provided the rights of a Merit System position.

Necessary Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, corrections, public administration, public safety administration, social or behavioral sciences, business administration, or related field

• Held role with progressive experience in a detention/correctional facility or with probation services

• Held managerial role within a detention/correctional facility or probation function

• Experience managing a work unit

• Experience implementing and monitoring work unit strategy

• Experience interacting with key internal and external stakeholders

• Experience working in environments that require adherence to high professional and ethical standards

Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in criminal justice, corrections, public administration, public safety administration, social or behavioral sciences, business administration, or related field
• Held role with progressive exposure to juvenile or youth services
• Experience working with, or knowledge of, court and probation systems
• Experience working with, or knowledge of, state and/or federal regulations relating to juveniles
• Experience building community relations, such as holding public forums, creating community-based programs, and working with local non-profits
• Experience working with, or knowledge of, audit compliance for a detention/correctional facility

Examples of Duties

The Deputy Director of Juvenile Detention directs the day-to-day operations of the Jefferson County’s youth detention facility. The Jefferson County Youth Detention Center is a 24-hour, seven day a week residential center for youth. Detainees are between the ages of 9 and 18, have committed a felony, and have been ordered by Family Court into detention. The Jefferson County Youth Detention Center has an 80-bed capacity. Through oversight of the facility’s operations, the Deputy Director of Juvenile Detention is responsible for compliance with established laws and regulations and providing care for detained youths. This includes tasks related to leading juvenile detention officers and clerical staff in providing rehabilitative care to juveniles; forging effective and collaborative relationships with the community and other correctional agencies; and managing a safe, healthy, and secure facility. The Deputy Director of Juvenile Detention directs the functional operations of the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center, ensures that employees have the necessary resources to accomplish goals, and assists the Director of Juvenile Detention in the execution of his/her authority in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the activities of the facility
